Product Details

Podocarpus henkelii, commonly known as Henkel's yellowwood, is an evergreen coniferous tree native to the montane forests of South Africa. This elegant tree is characterized by its graceful, drooping, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green, leathery, and up to 12 cm long, creating a weeping effect. It typically grows to a height of 10–20 meters, occasionally reaching up to 30 meters under optimal conditions. The tree has a straight trunk covered with rough, grayish-brown bark that exfoliates in thin, irregular flakes. Podocarpus henkelii produces small flowers, with male cones and fleshy, brightly colored female seed cones that attract birds. Renowned for its ornamental appeal, this species thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and can be grown in gardens or urban landscapes, where its slow growth and striking foliage make it a favored choice. It is also valued for its resistance to pests, diseases, and adaptability to different climates. Zones 9-11

Germination

To germinate Podocarpus henkelii seeds, start by soaking the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and promote hydration. After soaking, plant the seeds in a well-draining potting mix, such as a combination of compost, sand, and loam, ensuring they are covered lightly with soil as they require partial darkness to germinate. Place the pots in a warm, humid environment with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature range of 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to avoid fungal growth. Germination typically occurs within 4–12 weeks, although it can sometimes take longer, so patience is required. Transplant seedlings once they are sturdy enough to handle.
